Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment have announced a new ongoing series called “Heart Attack,” from writer and Skybound Narrative Director Shawn Kittelsen (“Mortal Kombat X”), artist Eric Zawadzki (“The Dregs”), colorist Michael Garland (“Leviathan”), and letterer Pat Brosseau (“Outer Darkness”).

“Heart Attack” is set in an America where gene therapy has eliminated disease, but has led to the creation of Variants – super-powered individuals, whom are denied human rights by the government. In the midst of a Variant rebellion, Charlie North is on the run from police and crosses paths with Jill Kearney. The pair are instantly attracted to each other and discover they both have powers that can cause mass destruction. Together, they must both work out far they are willing to go to save themselves.

In a statement to Skybound, Kittelsen described being grateful for Skybound for allowing them to tell an “unconventional sci-fi love story that’s more concerned with emotional arcs than action scenes.” He added that the idea for the series first came to him in 2014, when he first began fearing America could become a “nightmare.” He states Americans are now “living that nightmare daily, in one headline after another — hatred, violence, injustice, disparity, disenfranchisement and more.” Zawadzki stated that the “politics, fireworks and twists and turns are just the backdrop of a story about two people who find a very special connection with each other,” emphasising that the series uses a “sci-fi metaphor to convey that universal feeling of developing a crush on someone new.”

Zawadzki took to Twitter to share a short clip of the various layers of artwork that he used to create the cover for the first issue, which you can check out here.

“Heart Attack” #1 is scheduled for release on November 20.
