Image Comics imprint Top Cow have announced a new four-part miniseries called “St. Mercy,” by writer John Zuur Platten (Jurassic World: Evolution) and artist Atilio Rojo (“Cyber Force”). The series will follow Mercedes Oro, a 19th century descendant of the Incan Empire, and nominated protector of the cursed gold involved in the empire’s child sacrifice rituals, who lives in the frontier town of Arroyo Pass.
After nursing a wounded outlaw, his gang kill her and her family, and steal the cursed gold. Mercedes is then reborn through the curse imbued in the dagger used to kill her, becoming St. Mercy and setting out for revenge. The miniseries will also feature a second female lead, Toctollissica, an Incan spirit who St. Mercy must confront.
Platten stated, “I’ve always been fascinated by mythical stories of characters facing impossible odds,” going on to detail that the two female leads “must find the willpower to defy the evil and the powerful in the face of personal tragedy.” He added, “while ‘St. Mercy’ has its roots in the tradition of classic westerns, things take a violent, bloody, and unexpected turn once the demonic children appear.” Atilio said, “I’m really enjoying the series. It has a lot of elements that I enjoy drawing. This project demands a different aesthetic treatment, which is always refreshing for me!”
“St. Mercy” #1 is scheduled for release in comic shops and on digital platforms on August 25. You can check out four preview pages over at Image’s website.
