Eric Darnell, co-director of Madagscar and Antz, is switching mediums with the graphic novel “Intercats.” The project will bring together First Second Books and the animation studio Baobab for a series of graphic novels, the first of which is slated for a release in 2020.

The comedic novel will follow a family of celebrity cats as they climb towards the lucrative goal of fame and independence, relying on one another the whole way. “Taking what we think we know about animals and turning it on its ear can provide an elegant shorthand to getting at some of the things that make us human,’ said writer Eric Darnell. “The world of ‘Intercats’ provides similar opportunities.”

“The characters of ‘Intercats’ reflect the sometimes heroic lengths we will all go to to find our own independence and individuality in a world that really only values those things as they relate to others,” continued Darnell. “And perhaps, ultimately, that’s what matters anyway.”

“Few people can write truly funny—and ‘Intercats’ delivers characters and a universe that are side-splittingly hilarious,” said Mark Siegel, Editorial and Creative Director of First Second. “To top it off, Eric is a living legend in animation whose credits include iconic videos and features, plus the founding of Baobab Studios. I’m thrilled to introduced Eric to a new creative playground, in the booming world of graphic novels.”

James Dowling is probably the last person on Earth who enjoyed the film Real Steel. He has other weird opinions about Hellboy, CHVRCHES, Squirrel Girl and the disappearance of Harold Holt. Follow him @James_Dow1ing on Twitter if you want to argue about Hugh Jackman's best film to date.
