Marvel have announced a new “Iron Man” series, written by Christopher Cantwell (Halt and Catch Fire, “She Could Fly”) with art by CAFU (“Valkyrie: Jane Foster,” “The Life and Death of Toyo Harada”) and colors by Frank D’Armata (“Spider-Man: Life Story”). The new #1, set to release in September, will feature Tony in a new suit of armor designed by cover artist Alex Ross (“Marvels”). Marvel also released a video trailer for the series as part of the announcement.

Cantwell, whose “Doctor Doom” run with artist Salvador Larocca was recently nominated for the Eisner Award for Best New Series, wants to focus on a back-to-basics approach with Tony. In the press release, he says, “I’m over the moon about getting a shot at writing the Golden Avenger. Since Bob Layton’s art in the 1980s captured my imagination as a kid, I’ve been fascinated by Iron Man, and in this new story run I’m aiming to explore the question: who should Iron Man be today? An angel? A god? Or just a humble man? Tony’s going to try and strip the idea of Iron Man all the way down to its metal core, something that will constantly be at odds with his giant ego. We’ll see if he can truly keep his arrogant self-image in check, even as others with god complexes set their sights on the entire universe.”

Cantwell and CAFU’s “Iron Man” run will follow Dan’s Slott’s ‘Iron Man 2020’ event and the preceding “Tony Stark: Iron Man,” which launched with Marvel’s ‘Fresh Start’ initiative in 2018. Cantwell also contributed to ‘Iron Man 2020’ with a story in the anthology one-shot “2020 Iron Age” #1.
