Revealed in an interview with current BOOM! Editor in Chief Matt Gagnon, it looks like Mark Waid’s two creator-owned superhero books, Irredeemable and Incorruptible, are both concluding this May with issues #37 and #30, respectively.
For those not following along with the titles, Irredeemable featured Waid’s version of the classic super-question, “What would happen if the greatest hero mankind has became evil?”, and followed the Plutonian in a destructive rampage across the globe. Incorruptible soon followed, featuring the Plutonian’s nemesis Max Damage similarly changing sides in the wake of the Plutonian’s rampage.
When asked why the books are ending now, Waid replied, “I’m just stretched thin right now both personally and professionally, and I live in mortal fear that I’m going to overstay my welcome on these books. Moreover, I feel that Max Damage’s character arc is reaching its end in Incorruptible. And in Irredeemable, I’ve long known what the end of that series is, and lately, it’s as if all the characters are moving into position for it whether I want them to or not. So let’s go out big and grand, I say.”
Now, with Irredeemable #34 (out now) and Incorruptible #27 (out February 29th and supposedly great for new readers) will kick off the final arcs of each book. Irredeemable finds “a character thought forever lost returns to recruit Plutonian into helping save the Earth from the plague – and to do so, he (or she) has to make a bargain with Plutonian that turns the entire series premise upside-down and changes everything. Literally, everything.” Meanwhile, Incorruptible sees “Max’s newfound morals are put to the ultimate test as he has to stop a citywide anarchy spurred by the panic of the people of Coalville who now know certain nuclear death is on the horizon – literally on the horizon, as the radiation plague unleashed in Irredeemable sweeps North America.”
