Speculative posts are often fun to make, but it really helps if you’re the one coming up with the idea. Considering I am not the one who noticed any of this, I just want to make it clear: the following bit of speculation comes from Colin Bell at Comic Booked. If this were Jurassic Park, Bob Peck would look at Colin Bell and say, “Aahh, clevah boy!”, not me. So with that out of the way, let’s spread some speculative goodness:
So, some of you might remember that back in Captain America: Reborn by Brubaker, Steve Rogers had a vision of the future (pictured up top) in which we were attacked by creatures who looked exactly like the Martians seen in HG Wells’ War Of The Worlds. While we had seen the Martians before in Guardians of the Galaxy (and Marvel Zombies 5, kinda sorta), that all existed in an alternate timeline. It seemed like Rogers’ vision had gone as soon as it had come, but Steve Rogers and the Secret Avengers did make a trip to Mars in the first arc of the book.
Then the Tripods came back. In a more recent issue of Avengers by Bendis, Steve’s Vision popped up on the timeline presented by future Tony Stark, as well as an attack from the Martians themselves as pulled in by Kang due to time being broken. Even more recently than that, we saw a set of unknown creatures like tripods in Invincible Iron Man by Fraction during a vision Pepper Potts has as she’s dying, and when she asks what they are, the reply is to “Ask Tony Stark.” Hmm. Following this, Marvel released the news about their Architect Initiative, which has Bendis and Brubaker listed as well as Fraction the writer of a secret upcoming event. Supposedly there is a “glimpse of the future” in Iron Man #500, but I can’t help but notice Hickman’s name on the Architect list as well, who has been doing with his book SHIELD in connecting true history to Marvel’s fiction. Is it possible that HG Wells’ classic tale is going to be woven in there as well?
What do you think? Did Bell crack Marvel’s Da Martion Code? For more pictures and a much more clear rundown of ideas, check out Comic Booked. I can’t help but note that while the Iron Man sequence initially reminded me of Stark: Disassembled, I can’t help but note that Bell is probably right here.
