Jack’s Back in Torchwood: The New World

How that’s not the tagline of this new Torchwood series is beyond me, but that’s ok.

Those of who who watched Children of Earth (which I proclaimed as the best science fiction show of 2009) will know that things did not end on good terms. In fact, it was really quite dark. Doctor Who’s sister show set the bar for itself and ended with Jack leaving and Gwen being left in the ruins of what was once a proud organization. We even briefly saw Jack drinking himself away in some alien bar in the final episode of Tennant and Davies’ Doctor Who. So what happened?

Well, Jack’s coming back. A new series of Torchwood is coming, now apparently called The New World. It’ll be a ten episode series, and according to reports from the Television Critics Association Press Tour of 2010, Torchwood has been shut down and the CIA are now dealing with a new alien threat, which Jack and Gwen are called in on to help. The odd thing is that the show is being referred to as “rebooted” for a new audience, so those of you who didn’t watch it with Doctor Who or who missed all the fantastic dramatics from Children of Earth can feel free to hop in now. Whether this reboot is good or bad will be determined.

Fans will also note that the new Torchwood comic started last week, featuring Captain Jack himself, John Barrowman, on writing duties with Tommy Lee Edwards arting. I haven’t read it myself, so if you have, be sure to let us at MC know how it is. Either way, be prepared for the summer of 2011, when Torchwood returns.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
