Marvel have revealed that the Jane Foster will be taking up the mantle of Valkyrie in Jason Aaron and Al Ewing’s upcoming “Valkyrie.” In addition to the identity of the main character, the full creative team has been revealed: CAFU (“The Life and Death of Toyo Harada”) will be drawing the interior artwork, with Mahmud Asrar (“Conan the Barbarian”) drawing the first issue’s cover art, and Matthew Wilson (“Paper Girls”) coloring it. The new ongoing series was announced last month at C2E2 with the full details of the series having been kept a secret until now due to their connection to ‘War of the Realms.’

Warning: Spoilers for ‘War of the Realms’ #2 will follow the “Valkyrie” #1 cover.

“Valkyrie” will see Jane Foster take up the mantle after witnessing the massacre of the Valkyries in this week’s issue of “War of the Realms.” In an interview with Marvel.com, Ewing described how Jane, in the role of Valkyrie, is “mostly on her own” because Brunhilde is only “available for consultation occasionally.” He also detailed that she is different from the other Valkyrie because she will be wielding an entirely new weapon, Undrjarn the All-Weapon, which can “change its shape and be whatever the wielder needs.” Finally, Ewing concluding by stating that while Jane knows how to be Thor, the role of a Valkyrie, (“the warrior who fights for the living and the dead, and stands between both”) “is a very different beast” and this will only be further explored as Jane is in fact the first of a new generation of Valkyrie.

Jane Foster held the mantle of Thor from 2014, following the events of ‘Original Sin,’ until last year when Odinson took up the mantle again in “Thor” #1.

“Valkyrie” #1 will be released in July.
