In a bit of curious news, it appears that Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class and Woman in Black screenwriter Jane Goldman will be adapting Nate Simpson’s Nonplayer for the big the screen. The reason this is rather curious, however, is that to date there has been one issue.
Now, all things considered, that one issue was absolutely great. But out of a projected seven issues, no additional issues were completed due to Simpson admittedly starting over and then getting in a serious accident which broke his collar bone. To that same end, Simpson also admitted that funds to continue working on Nonplayer are causing additional delays to his completing the series.
Whatever is being adapted here is being adapted from assumedly almost nothing, outside of perhaps notes from Nate. However, the studio has apparently had the rights to since August of last year, so I suppose there is only so long you can wait. It wouldn’t be the first time a screenplay is written for a comic that hasn’t been finished (see: Scott Pilgrim and a number of Mark Millar books optioned before or during the release of the first issue).
It will be very interesting to see a live action adaptation of Nonplayer, assuming that that is what the studio is going for, because part of the beauty behind the book lies entirely in Simpson’s imagination spilling out onto the page. It would assumedly work better as a Studio Ghibli film than a Warner Bros summer blockbuster. Either way, look for more information on the book and adaptation as we find it.
UPDATE: Nate reached out to us on Twitter, saying “Actually, they’ve got a little bit more than “notes” to go on, but I take your point. #2ontheway”. I think I speak for all when I say that #2 can’t come soon enough!
