John Dykstra, the visual effects supervisor for X-Men: First Class, has set up his first directing gig for Super Zero, a re-titled adaptation of Jeff Lemire’s Essex County. The movie, whose screenplay was written by Johnny Carr, will be a live action film described as “family-friendly”, following the intertwining stories of an orphaned 10-year-old boy and his only friend, the town’s gas station attendant.

The original story also features a nurse who is not made mention of anywhere that I can see.

While we are happy for Lemire, it’s a bit odd that the movie is being retitled to Super Zero and one of the main elements of the book is being dropped. However, we cross our fingers and hope for the best. In the meantime, you can always get the absolutely wonderful collected edition of Essex County, which comes highly recommended from Multiversity.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
