At The Beat, BOOM! Studios imprint Archaia have announced the newest comics series based on the TV series The Storyteller, “Jim Henson’s The Storyteller: Ghosts.” A four-issue anthology, the first chapter is written and illustrated by Hungarian cartoonist Márk László with letterer Jim Campbell, and is inspired by the Scandinavian myth of the myling, which is the ghost of an unbaptized child.
The synopsis states, “A man traveling at night comes across a haunting cry from within the forest. He enters it to find a spirit who demands to be carried to its proper burial site. The man agrees, but as he travels forth, the spirit’s grip tightens… it grows in size…and the man moves slower and slower. Can he unburden himself of this terrifying weight before it brings him down for good?”
The Storyteller was created by Jim Henson in 1987, and starred John Hurt as the titular narrator, who retold obscure European folk tales. (A subsequent miniseries aired in 1990, The Storyteller: Greek Myths, featured Michael Gambon instead.) Since 2011, Archaia have published several “Storyteller” comic books, each focusing on stories of a different mythical creature – namely “Witches,” “Dragons,” “Giants,” “Fairies,” and “Sirens” – from around the world.
BOOM! Studios Editor Matthew Levine told The Beat, “Ghosts can shock and terrify us, but they also can reveal something profound about loss, grief, and the value of life. ‘Storyteller: Ghosts’ aims higher than just what goes bump in the night. This diverse collection of supernatural folklore will present plenty of scares, but you might be surprised by how touching these tales can be.”
“Jim Henson’s The Storyteller: Ghosts” #1 will be released in March 2020.
