Deadline reports British actress Joanne Whalley has been cast on Daredevil season three as Sister Maggie. “We are big fans of Joanne’s work and are fortunate that someone of her caliber will be joining our already talented family,” said Marvel TV’s Executive Vice President, Jeph Loeb. Erik Oleson, the new showrunner, added, “Joanne is a rare talent and a terrific creative collaborator. Watching her bring her role to life has the writers all pinching ourselves.”

Whalley, 56, is perhaps best known to American audiences as Sorsha in Willow, and also portrayed Christine Keeler in the 1989 film Scandal. She is a more visible presence on television, having appeared on classic British television series like Edge of Darkness and The Singing Detective, to more recent big-budget fare such as The Borgias and Wolf Hall.

Sister Maggie, who was created for Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s seminal 1986 storyline ‘Born Again,’ is Matt Murdock’s estranged mother, who left him as a baby with his father and joined a convent after finding herself unable to cope with postnatal depression. The character’s Marvel Cinematic Universe counterpart was previously hinted at in the final scene of the crossover show The Defenders (which was heavily inspired by ‘Born Again’), when another nun, watching over the injured and unconscious Murdock at their convent, notices him waking up and asks for her.

Daredevil season three will be released on Netflix at some point later this year.
