Joaquin Phoenix Up For The Role Of Lex Luthor?

Well, this sure is interesting. According to a report from Variety, Warner Bros. are looking to cast Joaquin Phoenix in the as yet unnamed Man Of Steel sequel. While the details of the role are, to put it charitably, vague at best, the report does say that Warner are looking at Phoenix to play the main antagonist in the film. Seeing as this used to be considered as Superman film, most are speculating that that would mean Phoenix is up for the role of Lex Luthor, right?

Well, probably, and he’d probably be pretty good in the role. Yet what interests me is that if the main villain is indeed Lex Luthor (with Metallo and even Doomsday rumoured to be side-antagonists and actors like Jason Momoa and Callan Mulvey being tipped to play villains in the movie), David Goyer and Zack Snyder must be playing something big for him to bring together Superman and Batman and (possibly) Wonder Woman. I say possibly because the manner in which Gal Gadot’s role was announced, i.e. dropped online with no real fanfare as opposed to a Comic Con panel dedicated to it, makes me think either she will have a cameo or bit part or they’re shoe-horning her in in the hopes that people will stop complaining. In either case, if Warner offers Phoenix the part and he accepts then that means they have another great actor on board for the film which is surely set to give The Avengers: Age Of Ultron a run for it’s money.

So two questions because reader interaction is fun: do you think Joaquin Phoenix is a good fit for Lex Luthor and if not, who would you rather see him play, if anyone?
