UPDATE: According to the most recent article published by Deadline Hollywood, Krasinski is not in the run for the role of Cap. Apparently all the previously reported contenders (Chace Crawford, John Krasinski, Scott Porter, Michael Cassidy, Patrick Flueger) are out and there are only two left: Mike Vogel (Cloverfield) and Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy). There is also a rumor that Chris Evans, previously of the Human Torch in Fantastic Four, is in the running, but I would chalk that one up to an unsubstantiated rumor.
Both Garrett and Mike have the “all-American” look we would want for someone playing Cap, but they’re both a little young in my opinion. If you’re asking me (Matt, the nosey and editing editor-in-chief), Marvel should be looking for an actor a little bit older than both of these men. Someone around Sam Worthington’s age/general look, without it necessarily being Sam Worthington. The thing to keep in mind is that whoever is going to play Cap is inevitably going to have to team up with Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, and Chris Hemsworth (and possibly Edward Norton too in some capacity). We really shouldn’t have someone that young when putting them up with stars like them.
Original Article: According to Fox411, it’s John Krasinski that Marvel is heavily leaning towards to play Steve Rogers in the upcoming The First Avenger: Captain America film. According to their source:
“John has read 4 times and is doing screen tests. He has screen tested 2 times so far. It’s very likely that he will be the new Captain America. He is a favorite among the key decision makers and has been asked to come back for more this week.”
Given that he was by far the most recognizable and bankable actor that Marvel screen tested, this comes as no real surprise. Yet, it is a surprise given his history as a somewhat goofy, loveable comic type. While we know he was impressive physical skills from his turn as Carter Rutherford in Leatherheads, it is as The Office‘s witty and often underwhelmed Jim Halpert that Krasinski is most well known for. This character exists in direct contrast with the stoic and sturdy Cap, but I have faith that he can pull the role off.
Whether or not Captain America screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have altered the climactic scene of the film to have Cap putting the Red Skull’s Cosmic Cube into Jello is uncertain, but that would definitely make for an interesting and fitting turn for Captain Halpert.
