As part of National Coming Out Day, DC Comics have announced that November’s “Superman: Son of Kal-El” #5 will reveal Jon Kent, the Superman of Earth, and son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane, is bisexual. The company shared an image from the upcoming issue by artist John Timms, showing Jon kissing his new love interest, reporter Jay Nakamura, after “a scene where Superman mentally and physically burns out from trying to save everyone that he can, [with Jay] there to care for the Man of Steel.”

Series writer Tom Taylor stated, “I’ve always said everyone needs heroes and everyone deserves to see themselves in their heroes and I’m very grateful DC and Warner Bros. share this idea. Superman’s symbol has always stood for hope, for truth and for justice. Today, that symbol represents something more. Today, more people can see themselves in the most powerful superhero in comics.” Timms added, “I’m incredibly honored to be working beside Tom on the ‘Superman: Son of Kal-El’ series showing Jon Kent tackling his complex modern life, while also saving the world from its greatest threats, villains and menaces.”

In their press release, DC were keen to stress “Superman: Son of Kal-El” takes place in the main continuity of the DC Multiverse. Jon was introduced by writer/artist Dan Jurgens in July 2015’s “Convergence: Superman” #2, and after some adventures involving time travel as Superboy, he became old enough to start sharing his father’s mantle in “Son of Kal-El,” which Taylor and Timms launched in July. Clark Kent still stars in “Action Comics,” the monthly series he first appeared in, and the miniseries “Superman and the Authority,” which concludes tomorrow.

Jim Lee, DC’s creative officer and publisher, said, “We couldn’t be prouder to tell this important story from Tom Taylor and John Timms. We talk a lot about the power of the DC Multiverse in our storytelling and this is another incredible example. We can have Jon Kent exploring his identity in the comics as well as Jon Kent learning the secrets of his family on TV on Superman & Lois. They coexist in their own worlds and times, and our fans get to enjoy both simultaneously.”

“Superman: Son of Kal-El” #1-3 are currently available online and in comics shops. Issues #4 and #5 will be respectively released on Tuesday, October 19, and Tuesday, November 9. As part of the reveal, DC have also released the trade dress for the main cover by Timms, displaying Pride colors, and variants by Travis Moore & Tamra Bonvillain, and InHyuk Lee emphasizing Jon and Jay’s relationship; you can view those here. The announcement comes two months after another high-profile DC hero, Tim Drake — the third Robin — was revealed to be bisexual in “Batman: Urban Legends” #6.
