Back at NYCC, we talked with Jonathan Hickman and he teased a few upcoming creator-owned releases in addition to his hefty and impressive workload over at Marvel (with SHIELD, Fantastic Four, and Secret Warriors). Now, with Red Mass For Mars out yesterday, Hickman said in an interview over at Comics Alliance that he is ready to begin his “second wave” of independent work.
As Hickman told CA, “This release completes the first concrete section, or block, of my professional work, and I’m very happy with how the collection came out… The next twelve months will see the publishing of my second block of creator-owned books. Some of this will come from Image (my PLUS! work), and some from other houses. And while I’m generally not a fan of calling my shot, I do feel like these next books will clearly show that I continue to evolve as a creator and as an artist/designer. “
Those of you who are regulars of the site might remember that at NYCC, Hickman mentioned directly to us that some of the upcoming work will include digital only release stuff through Image at the end of the year, which will be collected in a volume, as well as an OGN over at Oni. Hickman mentions PLUS! as well, which he had mentioned to us back in 2009 as well as on his own site, and it’s also safe to say that one of the things he’s working on could possibly be the rumored sequel to Pax Romana, as those who have read it will know that when it ends, it opens itself up to a wide array of possibilities with the timeline collected in the back of the trade.
Either way, exciting news all around, and I’m very intrigued to see what comes next.
