The BLVD Studios Press Release
For the seventh year in a row, the BLVD studios (booth #1223) will set up their own shop at Comic-Con International and meet fans on the main show floor (July 20-24). Adding one more member to this year’s line-up, world-renowned broadcaster and writer Jonathan Ross joins forces with Tommy Lee Edwards (1985,TURF), Sean Chen (Wolverine, Iron Man), Trevor Goring (Waterloo Sunset, Torchwood), John Paul Leon (Wintermen, Earth X), and Bernard Chang (Wonder Woman, Superman) to create the BLVD storybook 1.0.
Continuing a tradition started by the previous four BLVD sketchbooks from this group of esteemed creators, the new 40-page full-color BLVD storybook celebrates the comics medium in the form of five short stories. “The sketchbooks we try and release every year offer readers a behind-the-scenes look at the thinking behind the comics, books, movies, and games we illustrate,” states Edwards. “This Storybook demonstrates what comics we might do when given free reign. I’ve been lucky enough to spend the last couple years working with Jonathan Ross on our creator-owned book, TURF. Sometimes it’s tough to make time and do our “own thing”. Sean’s been busy on Avengers Academy. JP’s chipping away at his new Batman project. Trevor’s always storyboarding some Hollywood blockbuster, and Bernard’s drawing the new Deadman series for DC. So we switched around some priorities and are proud to release our ideas in the form of this exclusive comic in San Diego”
“We started throwing some ideas around, about comics. Books we love, books we hate, books weʼd like to read. Books weʼd like to make, if we had the time, but probably wonʼt ever get around to. Comics you donʼt see so much of anymore. Comics about Racing Drivers, and Cops and Barbarians. Not Cops and Barbarians together, although come to think of it…,” adds Ross. “And then we decided that maybe we would spend a little time making those comics come to life, even if we never get to go all the way. Even if they never actually make it to being full blown series, we wanted to throw them out there and see what people thought.”
The BLVD studio members have collaborated from around the world to bring a limited amount of their self-published BLVD storybook exclusively to Comic-Con. Please join the fun at booth #1223, where Jonathan, Tommy, Trevor, JP, Sean, and Bernard will all be there signing autographs, providing portfolio critiques, and selling limited copies of their acclaimed sketchbooks series, art prints, original art, and commissioned sketches.
