Chris Samnee, the creative force behind “Black Widow,” “Thor: The Mighty Avenger” and the upcoming “Fire Power,” will be pencilling and co-writing the new series “Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters” alongside his wife Laura Samnee. The series will be published through Oni Press, with whom Chris Samnee made his debut in the mid-2000s, and colored by Matt Wilson (“Swamp Thing,” “The Wicked + The Divine,” “Paper Girls”).

The ongoing series follows two sisters, Jonna and Rainbow, who travel out into the monster-infested wilderness to find their lost father. With the prehistoric world drying out around them and the monsters only getting fiercer, Rainbow and Jonna will have to regain their trust in one another if they want to survive the harsh world.

“It is a long time coming! I’ve always wanted to come back to creator-owned but honestly I had a lot of fun on the titles I worked on at Marvel,” Chris Samnee told Newsarama. “After co-writing ‘Black Widow,’ I felt like I had the confidence to go out and do something by myself. I’ve been chipping away at what became Jonna since 2014, so it really was time to get it out there. When my contract ended at Marvel, it seemed like the perfect time to go work on a couple of creator-owned titles.”

“Ultimately we wanted to create a book that we could read with our children but something that would appeal to adults as well – and give me a chance to draw some monsters,” Samnee continued. “Oni and James Lucas Jones were the first company to really take a chance on me by giving me my first real printed comics work — and it felt like a natural choice to come back to Oni with my first creator owned work.”

“Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters” #1 releases in June 2020, following Samnee and Robert Kirkman’s “Fire Power, Vol. 1: Prelude” on April 29. Learn more in Oni Press’s upcoming June solicitations.
