If you thought that government was hiding things before, then apparently you haven’t seen anything yet.
Announced today as the first of three new projects that Justin Jordan has set up at BOOM! Studios, “Deep State” is a new ongoing series with Ariela Kristantina on art and Artyom Trakhanov (artist of “Undertow”) on covers. Starring John Harrow, the book follows him in his job as a secret keeper for the United States, covering up all our deep, dark secrets from the public eye. As it turns out, while the moon landing was real it was actually the third time we’d been there, though only the first successful time. As the series kicks off, we’re introduced to Ms. Branch, a new FBI Agent who is “looking into cases she shouldn’t,” and we pick off from there.
So the book deals largely with conspiracy theories, but more so the “realistic” ones and not the ones that seem particularly off-the-wall crazy. As Jordan notes,
I don’t exactly believe in conspiracy theories. I say “don’t exactly” because there are absolutely, for sure, some conspiracy-type stuff that has happened. MK ULTRA, for instance, is something that happened and very much sounds like a conspiracy theory.
And there are conspiracy theories that I find more plausible than others. The one that I was reading that was about the Jonestown Massacre, which is a plausible theory. I can’t say I believe it, but I believe it could be true. As opposed to things like 9/11 Truthers, or Moon Landing hoaxes, which would require pretty superhuman skills to pull off, and were — allegedly — done for no particular reason. But I look at conspiracy theories, in general, like I do myths: they’re interesting, but what they mostly do is reveal the minds of the people that believe them.
What’s also interesting about the book is that Ariela is another SCAD alumni; Jordan rather notoriously plucked Tradd Moore for “Luther Strode” straight out of college, and it appears he’s still linking up with all the SCAD alumni he can. That bit of serendipity amuses me, but this also acts as a warning for anyone who wants to work with a future SCAD alumni: beware Justin Jordan.
“Deep State” is slated for a November 12th debut from BOOM!.
