A few weeks ago, in a month far, far away, it was announced that Gareth Edwards would be directing the first spin-off film of “Star Wars”. Fresh from “Godzilla”, most people were pretty jazzed about that news, but now, we have another announced spin-off coming, and it will be from Josh Trank (“Chronicle”, the upcoming “The Fantastic Four”). According to Entertainment Weekly, one of these films will focus on a young Han Solo while the other will focus on Boba Fett (pre Sarlacc Pit, I imagine), but whatever he ends up doing, the Lucasfilm team is amped:

“We’re thrilled to welcome Josh into the family,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX.”

Regardless of their hype words, I’m into it. A lot of people are cursing his name because of the whole Johnny Storm thing, but “Chronicle” was rad, and he’s clearly a guy who works well with special effects and has vision in his work. It is a little intense how many “Star Wars” movies are in development – what is Lucasfilm now, Marvel? – but if you asked the average Star Wars fan if they’d like to watch a Boba Fett movie directed by the guy who did “Chronicle”, I’d imagine you’d have near 100% approval rating. That’s what you get here.

More on this as we get it, but huzzah!
