While we all know that news stories that break on April Fool’s Day should be taken with a grain of salt, IESB fiercely claims that this is not one of those jokes. They reported today that Joss Whedon is one of the leading contenders on Marvel’s shortlist to helm the upcoming Avengers movie.
As I said, it’s hard to take any news story today seriously, but there seem to be a number of factors that give this one some weight. We know there is a shortlist for this job, as Louis Leterrier (Clash of the Titans, The Incredible Hulk) stated before. We know that this is the same source that IESB heard about Spider-Man 4 going on indefinite hiatus. And we know that Whedon has a Marvel connection, having written one of the most critically acclaimed runs on any X-Title ever with his work on Astonishing X-Men with John Cassaday.
Combine that all with the fact that he’s a well respected director who proved he can balance a big cast on a minimal budget with Serenity (not to mention the fact he’s probably on the Mount Rushmore of Modern Genre Creators), and I think he’d be a great choice. Whether or not he’s a real one is entirely uncertain, but we’ll post more as we get it.
