Writer Chip Zdarsky (“Daredevil,” “Stillwater”), artist Miguel Mendonça (“Nightwing,” “Justice League Dark”) and colorist Enrica Eren Angiolini (“Doctor Who,” “Sex Criminals: Sexual Gary Special”) are collaborating on the newest DC Digital First series, “Justice League: Last Ride,” a dystopic limited series featuring a tragic Justice League with a shattered trinity at its center.

“Once, the Justice League was the most powerful collection of superheroes in the universe,” says DC Comics in their press release. “But an unthinkable tragedy within its ranks has caused Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman to go their separate ways, leaving the League broken and disbanded under a veil of anger and mistrust. Now, against the backdrop of the universe’s greatest murder trial, can the League reconcile the past before they’re eradicated by the greatest villains in the cosmos?”

The comic will be divided into 16 chapters, telling a story of redemption akin to digital-first, alternate reality stories like “Injustice: Gods Among us” and “DCeased: Hope at World’s End.” Mendonça has been a career artist at DC for more than five years now, but Zdarsky is only just making his first major forays into writing for DC, following short stories in “Dark Nights: Death Metal Guidebook” and “Detective Comics” #1027, with larger contributions to titles like “Batman: Urban Legends” also in the works.

“Justice League: Last Ride” #1 releases digitally on April 14 for US$0.99, with the printed first issue in stores May 11 for $3.99 with a cover by Darick Robertson, or $4.99 with a cardstock variant by Mendonça. Each printed issue will contain two chapters of the digital comic.

James Dowling is probably the last person on Earth who enjoyed the film Real Steel. He has other weird opinions about Hellboy, CHVRCHES, Squirrel Girl and the disappearance of Harold Holt. Follow him @James_Dow1ing on Twitter if you want to argue about Hugh Jackman's best film to date.
