As a consequence of his revival, Plunder became mystically connected to the Savage Land, and gained new abilities, power that he’ll need to battle an ancient evil that has resurfaced in the prehistoric area. The synopsis states Ka-Zar, and his wife Shanna the She-Devil, “must fight together to protect their home and family! But their son Matthew has plans of his own…”
Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Ka-Zar and the Savage Land first appeared in in “X-Men” #10 (cover date March 1965). The character has starred in various series and one-shots over the decades, the last of which came out in 2011, and was written by Paul Jenkins with art by Pascal Alixe. Thompson stated he always wanted to write the character, and that “it’s an absolute dream-come-true to take a character created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and propel them into the modern Marvel universe with a whole host of horrifying new powers!”
He was inspired by how “Immortal Hulk” upgraded its title character, but said he also wanted to create “a distinct throwback to the old adventure pulps that inspired the character’s creation 65 years ago.” Garcia added, “There’s nothing better than having the opportunity to explore a classic Marvel character under a new light, and this is what we’re doing here. And it’s not just Ka-Zar, but the whole family, and as important as them, the Savage Land itself! It’s unreal and fantastic and I’m having a great time trying to portray the way I imagine it.”
“Ka-Zar: Lord of the Savage Land” #1 will be released in stores and online on September 8, with a main cover by Jesús Saiz, and a variant cover by Juann Cabal. Head on over Marvel.com for an unlettered preview in the meantime.
