Kelly Sue DeConnick to Adapt Forest’s “Barbarella” for Humanoids

As reported by Robot 6, it looks like everyone’s favorite Kelly Sue DeConnick will be working on a new adaptation of the cult-classic “Barbarella” for Humanoids’ 2014 line-up.

In addition to the announcement of three new books, including a prelude to “The Metabarons,” Humanoids is collecting Jean-Claude Forest’s classic sci-fi comic from 1962 but with a twist: the dialogue is going to be updated. While for the most part Humanoids offers English translations to foreign comics, Kelly Sue will be updating the script “for a modern sensibility,” albeit still ostensibly keeping it to the original tone.

Kelly Sue actually started her career in comics adapting manga into English (which was something we discussed the first time I ever interviewed her for this site), and while Robot 6 is reporting that this is an adaptation from a previously existing translation, this seems like a pretty great and serendipitous move on Humanoids’ part. While it’s pretty easy to get the film adaptation starring Jane Fonda (it’s on Netflix InstaWatch), it’s pretty impossible to get a copy of the comic, so having a new version that is accessible is to American audiences is pretty exciting.

Look for a more official release date some time later in 2014. It’s only January 1st, OK? Give ’em a break!

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
