Dark Horse and 12 Gauge have announced a new miniseries, “Kill Whitey Donovan” a Civil War period piece by Sydney Duncan and Natalie Barahona. The story promises to be a feminist revenge tale as Anna Hoyt goes after the titular Whitey Donovan, a man who pushed her sister to suicide. Anna is supported by Hattie Virgil, one of Whitey’s slave who agrees to help Anna in exchange for her freedom.

Both the writer and artist are new to the medium, with Duncan a screenwriter and novelist. The decision has reportedly led to a fortuitous pairing, with Barahona enjoying relative artistic freedom in her first departure from print illustration and animation design.

Duncan was originally “fascinated by this notion of how external and internal expectations guide identity,” when she began her script on the series “Hattie represented the external struggle and Anna the internal. I wanted to explore those ideas on this Inferno-esque journey during the Civil War, which was basically this war for identity and, I thought, the perfect backdrop for the story.”

Brian Stelfreeze was the one to suggest Duncan change mediums from novel to graphic novel and will serve as a historical consultant and editor on the series.

The first issue is due out on December 4th.
