This morning, we received the press release for a company that up until today we had never heard of: Killing The Grizzy. What is this, you might ask? Well, according to their press release, they’re a brand new agency that hopes to breathe something new into the comic community. This includes both funding and marketing for unknown works with the basic idea being to forge a better community.
What is really eye catching about the press release, though, is the big bold “Alternative To Zuda” comment. To quote the press release, “We’re in the process of putting together the pieces for an alternative to the now quashed ZUDA, and it won’t be a competition structure, but something far more organic, open, and fair and it will go far beyond what ZUDA ever did.” Supposedly this will be up in a matter of weeks.
It’s really interesting to me that the press release and company would launch so quickly after Zuda’s unfortunate demise, but on the plus side the alternative does sound interesting. The Zuda competition was a great thing while it lasted and it has since left fans and creators in the dust with it’s disappearance. So what could Killing The Grizzly bring – and what does it mean that they’re nixing the competition structure?

KILLING THE GRIZZLY has launched!
KTG is a brand new kind of agency and production house for graphic works, focusing on interactive marketing, community enagement, and transmedia to bring new and forgotten comic works back into the eye of publishers, producers, and readers.
As agents, we combine traditional print practices with new-fangled digital opportunities to raise media, reader, and publisher awareness of any creative work before formally shopping it around to potentially interested parties.
As producers, we’re in the process of establishing inclusive opportunities for independent creators to fund, produce, promote, and access exhaustive distribution for thier works.
To kick things off, we’ve brought together a number of relatively unknown, independent works with the intent of engaging the audience of the future, to allow more than just access to the work, but to further this and cultivate a real community whose input, interaction with us, demands and donations will create the very future for these comics.
Which is where the comics community comes in: in the very near future we plan to offer the comics community an unparalleled number of new avenues for funding, production, and promotion. We’ll be starting slow, however — we’ll be starting, in fact, with some KICKSTARTER campaigns. Kickstarter requires that we cultivate a very close relationship with our community in a relatively short period of time, but the actual interactive and engaging elements of KS are limited. However, it’s a great way to break the ice, pass out some wonderful new comics to you, begin conversations on them, have you, our community, take an active part in our first endeavor.
And if that’s not enough…..
An Alternative to Zuda?
You read that right. We’re in the process of putting together the pieces for an alternative to the now quashed ZUDA, and it won’t be a competition structure, but something far more organic, open, and fair and it will go far beyond what ZUDA ever did. We’re in talks to have this ready within the matter of a few weeks. So stay tuned!!!
