Kobe Gets What Shaq Doesn’t Have: The Infinity Gauntlet

In the first images from a relationship between Marvel and ESPN announced at NYCC this past weekend set to promote the upcoming NBA season, we have two actually pretty damn awesome images.

The first depicts Kobe Bryant, the intense and talented star of the World Champion Los Angeles Lakers, wearing the Infinity Gauntlet as competitors Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Rajon Rondo and Dwight Howard (alongside a slew of heroes including Ms. Marvel, Hulk, and Wolverine) reach out to take it from him. Personally, as a huge NBA fan and a huge Marvel fan, I was pretty convinced this would come across as cheesy as all get out.

Surprisingly both this and the second image, a spin on the very famous Amazing Spider-Man #50 image in which LeBron James walks away from his Cavaliers jersey that he recently threw in the trash with the headlines “The Unamazing Cavaliers” and “King James No More” around the image, are superb spins on Marvel lore that also work really well for the players that are featured. I mean, you can’t get a better pairing than LBJ and “Decision-Gate” compared to classic Spidey moment.

Here’s hoping the rest of the images are as spot on as the first ones. Nice work to ESPN and Marvel.
