During an online ceremony at CoNZealand today, “LaGuardia” by Nnedi Okorafor, Tana Ford, and James Devlin, won the Best Graphic Story or Comic Hugo Award.

The four-part miniseries, which was published by Dark Horse Comics’ imprint Berger Books, tells the story of Future Nwafor Chukwuebuka, a pregnant Nigerian-American doctor, who illegally smuggles a plant called Letme Live through LaGuardia International and Interstellar airport’s customs. When back in New York, Future has to face “interrogation, discrimination and travel bans,” as she and the plant set up their lives in the South Bronx as part of the growing African and shape-shifting alien population.

“LaGuardia” was one of six nominees for the award which included “Monstress, Volume 4: The Chosen,” “Mooncakes,” and “The Wicked + The Divine, Volume 9: Okay.” The first three volumes of “Monstress” previously won the Hugos for Best Graphic Story or Comic for the past three years running. Comic book adaptations received multiple nominations at the awards, though none were the winners. In the Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form category, Good Omens beat Avengers: Endgame and Captain Marvel, while The Good Place‘s “The Answer” won Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form, over two nominated episodes of Watchmen, “A God Walks into Abar,” and “This Extraordinary Being.”

“LaGuardia” also took home the Best Graphic Album — Reprint award at the 2020 Eisner Awards ceremony, which took place at Comic-Con@Home on July 25.
