You’ve been wondering (we assume) who would take over “Detective Comics” after Tony Daniel’s final issue in September. As it turns out, the answer might surprise you.
Announced early this morning on DC’s The Source, it appears John Layman will be the new incoming writer of DC’s “Detective Comics”, along with artist Jason Fabok. Fabok you may remember from the recent “Batman” annual dealing with Mr. Freeze, but this is Layman’s first big break into DC after a string of Marvel Comics in the past. It’s interesting to note, as well, that Layman gets to hop right into the Batman franchise with his first foray into the DC Universe. If that doesn’t count as a pretty big break, I don’t know what does. (You know, outside of that incredibly successful creator-owned book “Chew” he writes.)
So what is this story going to be about? As Layman tells The Source,
I’m going to take a look at the role of criminal organizations within Gotham City, hopefully from a perspective that does not get considered very often (if at all). From the symbiotic relationship a master criminal must have with Gotham in order to survive, to the lowly, often faceless criminal underling hoping to rise up the ranks. All that, plus Batman’s gonna play with a bunch of crazy new toys and kick all kinds of butt.
Fabok also notes in his half of the announcement that he hopes to evoke the classic 90’s animated series, and considering how many kids that converted into Batfanatics, that will certainly be interesting to see.
Look for “Detective Comics” #13 in October of this.
