Announced on Friday at IGN but expanded in today’s full solicit reveal for DC/Vertigo at Newsarama, there’s a new Vertigo series coming from Lee Bermejo in February titled “Suiciders”, and it sounds fairly entertaining. While it does sound eerily like certain plot elements of the much maligned “Escape from L.A.” (I love it, but I saw it when I was 10) – if anything, it’s “Escape from L.A.” meets “The Running Man” – it sounds like a potentially highly entertaining concept that merges hyper violence with gritty, grimy character development.

In short, the type of thing Lee Bermejo is built for.

The book goes full out Mature Readers style as it tells the story of The Saint, the top man in New Angeles’s (post apocalyptic Los Angeles) cutthroat, futuristic gladiator like TV series called Suiciders, which combines MMA, obstacle courses, drugs and tech to make the world’s nastiest and most violent reality show around. So yeah, with Bermejo writing and drawing, this thing could be a pretty interesting little piece. At the very least, it’s going to be beautiful in its darkness, and we’ll see how it comes together in February. Check out the solicit below and the book when it launches February 4th.

In the post-apocalyptic city of New Angeles, killing isn’t just a crime – it’s entertainment.
When the “big one” finally hit the West Coast, Los Angeles was left in ruins. And when the U.S. government decided to cut the city loose, things went from bad to worse. To survive, L.A. did what it does best: It turned survival into entertainment.
Now, thirty years later, the city of New Angeles is thriving once more thanks to the blood sport known as SUICIDERS – a TV series that combines the spectacle of hand-to-hand combat with elaborate, high-tech obstacles that test each competitor’s ability to survive. But these competitors have an edge: They’ve been freakishly enhanced by drugs and technology. The results are both marvelous and monstrous, as the man called The Saint begins to rise above his fellow Suiciders.
SUICIDERS is a dark, post-apocalyptic epic that tells the story of a strange, brutal world, written and illustrated by Lee Bermejo, the #1 New York Times best-selling writer/artist behind JOKER, BATMAN: NOEL, LUTHOR and BEFORE WATCHMEN: RORSCHACH.
