As revealed in a Nerdist exclusive, Legendary Comics will release “Godzilla: Aftershock,” a new graphic novel from writer Arvid Nelson (“Batman: Joker’s Asylum”) and illustrated by Drew Edward Johnson (“52”).

The book takes place after the catastrophic events of 2014’s Godzilla movie, and will serve as a prequel to next year’s Godzilla: King of The Monsters. It follows Monarch operative Dr. Emma Russell (played by Vera Farmiga in the sequel) “as clues emerge to reveal a terrible secret — a tragedy, of apocalyptic proportions from the distant past that changed the course of human history, [that] is returning to threaten it once more.” As she travels around the globe uncovering more secrets, a mysterious figure follows her and her every move.

In the meantime, Godzilla will clash with an ancient foe whose rivalry is “as old as the earth itself.” Robert Napton, Senior Vice President of Legendary Comics, said “’Godzilla: Aftershock’ is yet another exhilarating entry into the canon of the MonsterVerse, and it is especially exciting to introduce fans to a brand new original monster unique to the comic, but true to the legacy of Godzilla.”

Fans attending Los Angeles Comic-Con this weekend can check out the Legendary Comics’ “Godzilla: Secrets of the MonsterVerse” panel, on Saturday, October 27 at 3 pm. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive an exclusive signed/numbered Godzilla poster only available at the panel.

“Godzilla: Aftershock” will be released sometime in the Spring of 2019. Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be released in theaters on May 31, 2019.
