In a crowded climate of Marvel adaptations and cultural appropriation allegations (that’ll twist your tongue), Fox has been stealing the spotlight on screens both silver and small with the R-rated Logan, a box office hit, and critical-darling Legion, which is currently airing its first season on FX. Showrunner Noah Hawley, creator of the Fargo series, has been taking bold steps with the Marvel property, crafting a surreal and innovative television experience that challenges the viewer with complex plot execution, but rewards with an inspired visual splendor. It’s rare to find such progressive filmmaking on TV, nonetheless in adapted comic book properties, and FX plans to keep the ball rolling with a second season.
Staying true to the nature of the show, the press release is decidedly cryptic, revealing only the return of Noah Hawley as creator and executive producer. No member from the cast has been confirmed to reprise their role, and we assume this information won’t be announced until after the season one finale to avoid potential spoilers. There is also no indication of season-length, though I hope they retain the brisk pace of the first season.
The critical acclaim of Legion is sure to have played a part in its renewal, and there is no doubt this is a success for everyone. The promise for more is an exciting proposition, especially considering how this show could motivate other creators to take risks with the Marvel license. Executive Producer and Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb, is “thrilled” about the new season, and states on behalf of Marvel Television: “We’re particularly proud of our partners at FX and the success we share on our first TV series together.”
No official word on the date, but it’s expected to debut sometime in 2018.
