“Sweet Tooth” creator Jeff Lemire has announced he is launching a paid Substack newsletter with an exclusive comic next week. Few details were given on the plot of the comic, which is titled “Fishflies,” but Lemire expects that when finished, the serialized comic will be a total of over 500 pages long. He will be “posting approximately 5 pages a week (depending on natural stop points in the story),” and digital copies of each “complete chapter of the book” once they’ve concluded.
As well as “Fishflies,” Lemire will be sharing new ‘Black Hammer’ comics in the newsletter from 2022. He said, “I’m collaborating with a number of exciting creators to create some new ‘Black Hammer’ short stories that I’ll publish here over the next year.” These will also include a “full-length” Colonel Weird comic, co-written by “Barbalien: Red Planet” and “House of Slaughter” veteran Tate Brombal, and fully painted by fellow writer/artist Ray Fawkes (“Black Hammer ’45”). The ‘Black Hammer’ books were created with artist Dean Ormston at Dark Horse Comics, and the publisher will continue “to print variant covers” available only through his newsletter’s store page. (Lemire clarified on Twitter that “I will still be doing just as many comics in print with [Image and Dark Horse] as I always have. The Substack material will be extra on top of that.”)
Fans will be able to read Lemire’s comics on Substack for $7 a month, or for a cheaper annual rate of $75 a year. You can read more about the perks that will come with each subscription, as well as Lemire’s decision to donate a portion of this year’s proceeds to charity Rainbow Railroad, at the full announcement here.
