Leviathan is rising and so are Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, who will be headlining their own ongoing series for the first time in decades. Spinning out of the events of the ‘Leviathan Rising’ arc in Brian Michael Bendis and Steve Epting’s “Action Comics,” the pair are each getting their own series launching in June. Writing and illustrating the Jimmy Olsen book will be Matt Fraction and Steve Lieber, and working on Lois Lane’s book will be Greg Rucka and Mike Perkins. The series were revealed in DC’s May 2019 solicitations in the solicit text for a one-shot special related to the arc called “Superman: Leviathan Rising Special” #1. This marks the first time that both characters have headlined ongoing series since “Superman’s Girl Friend, Lois Lane,” and “Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen” were both cancelled after a 100+ issues each in 1974. Both characters have appeared prominently in DC’s animated and live-action properties, and in Bendis’ “Superman” books in the last year. This marks Matt Fraction’s first work at DC after years at Marvel on books like “Hawkeye” and “Invincible Iron Man,” and work on the Image Comics book “Sex Criminals” with Chip Zdarsky. Rucka has previously worked on “Action Comics,” and is best known for his DC work on books like “Batwoman,” “Wonder Woman,” “52,” and “Gotham Central.” Lieber most recently has worked with writer Nick Spencer on “Superior Foes of Spider-Man” at Marvel and “The Fix” at Image, but has collaborated on previous DC work with Rucka. Perkins also has a number of Marvel credits on books like “Captain America” and “Deathlok” and recently made the jump to DC, closing out “Green Lanterns” with Dan Jurgens.

Fraction (and his wife, writer Kelly Sue DeConnick, who recently took over “Aquaman”), Rucka, and Lieber, are all Portland, Oregon-based creators, just like Bendis. Both books had also previously been rumored to be in the works, and hinted at in the lead pages of Bendis’s “Action Comics.”

You can find the rest of DC’s May 2019 solicitations here, and a deeper analysis next week in our Soliciting Multiversity column. “Lois Lane” #1 and “Jimmy Olsen” #1 will be out in June 2019, and you can check back here at Multiversity for more details as they come.
