Two miniseries exploring the villains of Star Wars were announced at Lucasfilm Publishing’s San Diego Comic-Con last night. The first, “Star Wars Adventures: Return to Vader’s Castle” comes from IDW Publishing, and serves as a sequel to last year’s “Tales from Vader’s Castle.” Writer Cavan Scott returns along with cover artist Francesco Francavilla for the Halloween-themed miniseries. Each of the five issues will focus on a different villain from the Star Wars canon, and will feature a guest artist:

  • In issue 1, guest artist Megan Levens follows Darth Maul, Levans says that “getting to tell a part of his story (and draw those fabulous tattoos) was something I didn’t hesitate to sign up for!”
  • Issue 2 looks at Grand Moff Tarkin, who illustrator Kelley Jones “always had a sneaking admiration for […], as he was – in all honesty – the real evil of the Empire: cold, calculating, and all too human!”
  • In the third issue, Nick Brokenshire will draw Asajj Ventress’s “super-creepy shenanigans.”
  • The fourth issue focuses on Jabba the Hutt and is illustrated by Nicoletta Baldari.
  • Finally, issue 5 is illustrated by Charles Paul Wilson III, and is about Darth Vader himself. Wilson told IDW, “that I’d draw the Kessel Run in less than 14 parsecs if they could get me on this book again, and they told me I could do it… but only if it was in under 12.”

Every issue will have a cover variant by that issue’s guest artist. The first issue also has a retailer incentive cover by Derek Charm. Francavilla, who did the covers for the first “Vader’s Castle” said he is “hyper-excited to be back working on ‘Vader’s Castle’! I had so much fun doing the covers for the first mini, and Cavan’s tales are such a delight, that I was happy to hear from IDW that there would be a sequel. I agreed to work on interior pages as well, so it’s double the fun for me and for all the readers!”

The book will ship weekly in October: as writer Cavan Scott says, “what better way to celebrate the scariest time of the year than by focusing on the villains of the Star Wars saga?”

There are less details on the second mini, Marvel’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren.” Writer Charles Soule teased in a tweet that the four-issue series, which launches just before Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, will tell “the one story everyone’s dying to see, about Kylo and the Knights of Ren.” There is no announced artist, but there is a teaser image:
