Marvel have announced writer Jed MacKay, artist C.F. Villa, and colorist Federico Blee will be relaunching the “Avengers” comic following the conclusion of Jason Aaron’s run in May. The new era will see Earth Mightiest Heroes — consisting of Iron Man, Thor, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Captain America/Sam Wilson, and Black Panther/T’Challa, and led by Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers — receive foreknowledge of a series of disasters known as the Tribulation Events, which they must now assemble to prevent.

The first issue will see the team work to prevent John Byrne’s “Fantastic Four” villain Terminus from bringing about ‘the fall of the Impossible City.’ The relaunch will also follow on from the “Timeless” one-shots MacKay wrote, which saw Kang the Conqueror go on the hunt for the Missing Moment, placing him in conflict with the mysterious superheroes known as the Twilight Court. Will the Avengers “be able to triumph in the face of the Tribulation Events and learn the truth behind these earth-shattering threats? Or will they be reduced to mere pawns in an extraordinary scheme beyond their comprehension?”

MacKay commented, “I grew up on the Avengers, weaving in and out of their ’60s and ’70s exploits as a kid, and having the opportunity to plot the course of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is a rush, especially coming from the street-level and/or weirdo niche I’ve been working in over the last couple of years. This is big, loud Avengers stuff — nothing in this story should ever feel small or inconsequential, and our lineup reflects that. Heavy hitters and iconic Avengers are to the fore — the Tribulation Events are coming, and only the Avengers can take them on.” He also expressed excitement at working with Villa again after their 2020-2021 run on “Black Cat.”

The new “Avengers” #1 will be released on May 17, a couple of months before the 60th anniversary of the team’s debut on July 2, 1963 (cover dated September 1963.) It will feature a main cover by Stuart Immonen, who will provide cover art for the whole series. Jason Aaron’s five-year run, which is currently in the midst of the climactic crossover ‘Avengers Assemble,’ will conclude beforehand with the oversized “Avengers Assemble Omega” on April 19.
