Entertainment Weekly have revealed that “Ms. Marvel” writer and creator G. Willow Wilson is set to leave the title next year, with Kamala Khan’s title getting relaunched with writer Saladin Ahmed (“Black Bolt”) and artist Minkyu Jung (“Nightwing”) as “The Magnificent Ms. Marvel.”

Kamala Khan first appeared in “Captain Marvel” #13, back in 2013, before she became the first Muslim Marvel superhero to get her own series in “Ms. Marvel,” created by writer G. Willow Wilson, artist Adrian Alphona, and editors Stephen Wacker and Sana Amanat. She has since grown in popularity and has joined the Avengers and the Champions.

“Ms. Marvel” has been written by G. Willow Wilson for the series’ entirety, with various artists joining the project along the way. Wilson, even to this day is shocked at the popularity of the character: in the interview announcing her departure, she stated she thought the series “would only have about 10 issues,” and recently planned for the series until “the end of this year,” so that she would have spent five years on the book. Instead, she says that her run will end with her 60th issue, so that she can leave on a “high note.”

Ahmed, who will be taking over the character with the new series, describes Kamala as “the face of everything that’s new and fresh and exciting and ‘21st century’ at Marvel, and with superheroes in general.” He also spoke of his admiration for Wilson, noting that she has been crucial in helping him to settle into the comic book “craft and business.” In regard to details for the new series, Ahmed gave very little away, detailing that the book will have a “big-canvas Marvel scope… while still maintaining that intimate tone that people have loved” about Wilson’s series. He also praised the tone of art that Jung will be providing on the series, describing it as “darker and more atmospheric,” but specified that the series is “not ‘gritty Ms. Marvel.’”

“The Magnificent Ms. Marvel” #1 will be released in March. In the meantime, you can read Wilson’s heartfelt farewell letter to her fans here.
