Via The Beat, BOOM! Studios have unveiled the latest series for their young adult BOOM! Box imprint. “Mamo,” a five-issue miniseries written and drawn by Sas Milledge, follows young witch Orla O’Reilly as she returns to her hometown, only to be pulled into the affairs of the fae.
“The youngest in a long line of hedge witches, Orla finds herself back in the town where she grew up after her grandmother, Mamo’s, death,” the official synopsis reads. “But without Mamo around to deal with the town’s magic, it’s quickly fallen into chaos and now there’s a poltergeist in local Jo Manalo’s attic!”
This will be the first series Milledge has both written and illustrated. She has previously worked for BOOM! providing cover art for “Lumberjanes” and “The Storyteller: Fairies,” as well as interior art for “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer” #7. DC fans will know her for her work on “The Lost Carnival: A Dick Grayson Graphic Novel,” the middle-grade OGN from 2019. “This book has been circling around my head for the better part of a decade, and I’m so glad it has finally landed here in its final form,” Milledge said. “A story about family and friendship filled with witches, birds, faeries, and trolls!”
“Sas Milledge has magicked into existence an exciting new world for us to explore, filled with the most delightful witches, magic, and mystery,” BOOM! Studios Associate Editor Sophie Philips-Roberts added. “‘Mamo’ is a fresh new take on the modern witch, and also, an insightful look at what it’s like to grow up, move away, then come home as an adult to deal with family and legacies long forgotten.”
“Mamo” #1 (of 5) is scheduled to hit shelves this July. Preview pages, as well as variant covers from Trung Lê Nguyễn and Veronica Fish, can be seen at The Beat.
