While this is by no means a true apples to apples comparison, DC’s Superman reboot “Man of Steel” opened to a gigantic $21 million open on Thursday, surpassing the $18 million of “The Avengers” and $16 million of “Iron Man 3” to be the second largest Thursday open of a superhero movie ever, behind only “The Dark Knight Rises” (and the Twilight/Harry Potter films, of course).
The part that isn’t apples to apples is that “Man of Steel” had 7 pm Walmart showings in the mix, adding $12 million to its coffers in a showing that most of these other films didn’t have. It’d be rather hard to predict where exactly this ends up in its opening weekend, if only because we’ve never seen anything like that, but one thing is certain: DC was wise in greenlighting a sequel, as this baby is going to be huge.
Look for plenty more about “Man of Steel” coming from us soon.
