In the most recent Cup O’ Joe over at CBR, one of the questions posed to Joe Quesada was about Mark Millar’s supposed plans for Spider-Man. However, Joe responded that he had no idea about a Spider-Man project, but would rather have Millar answer the question himself. Millar’s response was:

Ah, I’m glad you brought this up because I’ve been putting together notes on this for months and I’m getting very excited about it. I like the idea of jumping back and forth between creator-owned books and Marvel projects. It just appeals to me creatively, and when I’ve run out of juice on one thing I can jump over to the other, feeling completely rejuvenated again. I’ve a wave of Millarworld things either out now or coming out soon with “Nemesis,” “Superior” and of course “Kick-Ass 2” starting in August, but then it’s straight back into a Marvel mega project for me to exercise the other side of my brain. In the meantime, you have the amazing Leinil,Yu drawing Ghost Rider, Punisher, our new Hulk and all your favourites in “Ultimate Avengers 2” (with Steve Dillon already hard at work on “Ultimate Avengers 3” featuring Blade and my brand new Daredevil). But between now and Christmas I’m getting serious on this highly classified Marvel project and hope to come out to New York soon to talk to the guys in a little more detail. It’s way to soon for spoilers and so a hint is probably best at this stage, even if it’s only a letter. Let me see. What letter could I spill from the title? “X,” perhaps?

So we have Nemesis, which is set to wrap up in August; Kick-Ass 2, which is set to start in August; and Superior, which is set to start in October. Now, after all this creator owned work, Millar plans to move back into the Marvel Universe proper after his dystopian trilogy (Old Man Logan, Fantastic Four, and 1985) with something related to the letter “X.” Obviously when talking about the Marvel U, the first thing anyone would think of with that letter is the team of the X-Men. So what could Millar have planned?

On the same hand, is it too soon for something else to happen to the X-Men? After going through Second Coming and being quickly put on a shaky new path with 6 on-going titles (X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor, X-Men Legacy, X-Force, and New Mutants), and some of you might remember Millar’s dismay at the plot of the new X-Men ongoing by Victor Gischler that happened a few months ago. If this is some sort of reaction to that, then it’ll be very interesting to see exactly what Millar has planned.

Granted, this is all speculation based on a letter given by one of the biggest teaser writers in all of comic land, but never the less. Thoughts? What do you think Millar and his crazy Scottish brain have planned next?

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
