During Marvel’s “Secret Empire” panel at San Diego Comic-Con, it was announced that the Eisner Award-winning team of writer Mark Waid and artist Chris Samnee (“Daredevil,” “Black Widow”) will take over on “Captain America” from #695. Waid affirmed the series will star the “Steve Rogers that we know and love.”
Samnee and Waid’s run will mark a back to basics approach to Steve Rogers, who has been through a turbulent few years under writers Rick Remender and Nick Spencer. Remender transformed Rogers into a frail old man, forcing Sam Wilson / Falcon to take up the mantle of Captain America. Spencer’s run saw Rogers’ youth restored, but also saw him turned into a HYDRA double agent, culminating in this year’s “Secret Empire” crossover where Rogers became the dictator of the United States.
Waid is no stranger to Steve Rogers, having written the “Captain America” comic from 1995 to 1999, and “Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty” from 1998 to 1999. His most recent exploration of the character came in 2011’s limited series “Captain America: Man Out of Time,” drawn by Jorge Molina, which explored the character’s time after his reintroduction in the original “The Avengers” #4. Samnee meanwhile, contributed to Ed Brubaker’s run on the series with back-ups to the ‘Gulag’ arc, and drew ‘The Life Story of Bucky Barnes.’
The new run will begin with Rogers rediscovering himself on a road trip. Waid said, “Steve is kind of tired of being the couch-surfer of the Marvel Universe, he’s never really had a place to call his own other than Avengers Mansion. This is him getting back in touch with Captain America, learning how people perceive Captain America in light of ‘Secret Empire.'” Spencer added “There are a lot of heroes asking big questions… not to mention [dealing with] some pretty catastrophic losses.”
“Captain America” #695 is due out in November.
