Marvel 1, Fox News 0

If you haven’t heard yet, it turns out Fox News and most of the right wing political world are…upset about Captain America #602 and its protest signs that included a message that said “Tea Bag The Libs Before They Tea Bag You”. While Marvel and series writer Ed Brubaker has been quick to say that they are removing the message from future printings and trade paperbacks and that the message came from a letterer or editor, that is clearly not enough for the ever tempermental folks at Fox News. As taken from the article:

“(National Tea Party board member Michael) Johns accused Brubaker of “blame-shifting” and questioned why an apology or retraction hadn’t been issued as soon as the writer or Marvel executives noticed the politically charged signs.”

The rest of the comic world has been quick to defend Brubaker, as Fox has targeted this as a move of political commentary by him (of course).

However, all Fox News managed to really do was prove an old adage to be correct: there’s no such thing as bad publicity.

As Rich Johnston over at Bleeding Cool points out, remaining copies of this title are flying off the shelves and speculators are snatching them up at prices that are many times cover value.

All in all Fox News and their report about Marvel’s wicked, lefty leanings has been a boon for the title. So from a comic fan who loves to see success and buzz about my favorite oft forgotten industry, Fox News, I salute you. So long and thanks for all the sales!

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
