Marvel and the Case of the Missing Solicits

People have often asked how some of us at Multiversity order comics, since we often mention doing a mix of both in-store and online subscriptions. At least half of us go through the website DCBS, which offers discount comic books at flat rate shipping which allows us to buy more comics than the average person. Of course, this means we have to pre-order two months in advance for our books (just like retailers), so we usually have to keep our ears to ground in terms of solicitations and what we’re excited for).

While I can’t speak for the other members of the site, my personal fashion for setting up my orders involves going to the websites of all my favorite comic books and making lists of books I’ll want in any given month. However, last night while I
was doing my order for January’s books, I noticed that I didn’t have some of the books I would have normally had on my pull – specifically, Widow Maker and Heroes For Hire. Both of these books are coming from Marvel beginning in December. So when I went back to Marvel’s website to investigate what happened, I noticed something: Marvel’s website is missing a good handful of their December solicits.

Now – it is not uncommon for websites to change solicit information from how they were originally released. Delays in comics happens, release dates change, etc. However, what struck me curious is now, a book like Heroes For Hire #1 is simply missing 100%. I double checked my information of Marvel’s December 2010 solicits via ComicBookResources’ solicit posting, and found that Heroes For Hire #1 is in fact supposed to be released in December. Heroes For Hire #2 is solicited for January on Marvel’s site, but no #1. Same with the case of Widow Maker issues #1 and #2, both solicited for December via the originally released information, but with no information on Marvel’s site. We’re also missing the solicits for new minis, like Iron Man/Thor, Punisher: In The Blood, and Warrior’s Three (all of which just started last week).

As I said, it’s not uncommon for solicits to get pushed to later dates – but to be missing entirely? That does strike me as a little odd. So is someone just forgetting to update Marvel’s site? Granted, Marvel’s site is much better off in comparison to Image’s, who will apparently be releasing an issue of Invincible once a week in December, but regardless. It strikes me as odd that entire solicits can disappear like that.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
