Marvel Announces Avengers 2’s Subtitle To Assumedly Mixed Reactions

Tonight at San Diego Comic Con’s legendary Hall H, Marvel had some fun. They showed off footage to their new films, including Guardians of the Galaxy, and then announced that Avengers 2 — tentatively set for Summer of 2015 — has a subtitle. A subtitle you probably weren’t expecting if you saw Avengers and watched that scene in the credits. A subtitle you probably don’t want to necessarily see given your particular opinion of recent Marvel books.

A subtitle that reads:

Yup. Avengers 2: Age of Ultron.

I won’t lie: this is a bit shocking. “Age of Ultron,” as a book, was met with incredibly mixed reactions; continuity hounds ate it up as Bendis’ swan song, but it was more of a gateway comic — something that was done both to tie off a few loose ends and then push towards the (assumed) destruction of the Ultimate Universe while cleaning up some continuity bits and tricks. As a film, especially after Thanos was introduced, you have to wonder — … well, why? Not even in an angry fanboy kind of way, but “Age of Ultron” was about alternate universes and timelines and whatnot. Is that really what should follow the massive critical acclaim of Avengers, an otherwise straightforward action comic film?

Who knows. Marvel has a good record with their movies. Perhaps we should just trust them this one time.

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
