Availability of all intentionally all ages content within mainstream comics has been a bit of a hot button topic these last few years, one we’ve put under the microscope here at Multiversity again and again and again. Throughout this time, the Marvel Adventures line has been somewhat of a cornerstone (or sum total, if we’re being honest) of Marvel’s all ages output. Undergoing a bit of a retooling and rebirth every few years, it looks like The House of Ideas is once again remodeling their Adventures line with two brand new ongoing series intended to capitalize on the young adult market centering around the Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes cartoon and the upcoming new Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon debuting this spring.
Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes Adventures will feature two stories in the first issue from the perspective of the (movie-verse exclusive character) Agent Coulson. The team behind the book will be writer Chris Yost (no stranger to the all ages crowd given his many years of service within Marvel Animation) and artist Adam Dekraker. This book is not a dumb move on Marvel’s part, as creating product to capitalize not only upon their successful cartoon but also upon their majorest of major motion pictures makes good business sense. The book will join the ranks of not only the official movie adaptation and prequel comics but Bendis and Bagley’s new Avengers Assemble ongoing, ALSO intended to tie in at least thematically with the film.
Ultimate Spider-Man Adventures will be envisioned by the Man of Action collective (which has historically included the likes of Duncan Rouleau, Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, and Steven T. Seagle and is responsible for the Ben 10 franchise, amongst other things) in addition to current Amazing Spider-Man scribe Dan Slott and Ty Templeton and illustrated by Nuno Plati. The book is set to feature Peter Parker dealing with a lot of high school zaniness in addition to the burden of being Spider-Man. In other words, a lot like the last 11 years of Ultimate Spider-Man by Bendis.
These announcements are notable in that, while plenty of top talent has filtered through Marvel’s all ages line throughout the years, never before (to my knowledge) have writers that are currently heavily involved with the “main” Marvel Universe versions of these characters also been involved in the more kid friendly versions. It should be interesting to see how these series dovetail and work with the more adult oriented versions of these characters on the stands.
Both books will be out this April at $2.99 a pop.
