Update: And, taking to Twitter, Scott Derrickson has confirmed his role as director.

Still no word on whether or not they’ve nailed down the Squeakquel writers, though.

Original Article

Apparently in an attempt to stem the tide on the amount “What the hell is going on with Ant-Man?” articles that have cropped up in the last week, it seems like Marvel have found a director for their upcoming Doctor Strange film.

Which, apparently, is actually a thing that’s happening.

According to the Hollywood Reporter (and, honestly, until we get actual confirmation by way of Marvel Studios themselves, I’m still remaining skeptical), Marvel has named Scott Derrickson as the director of Doctor Strange. Before you go opening IMDB in a new tab, let me break this down for you: writer of the surprisingly good – until it shits the bed in the third act – horror film, Sinister; writer and director of the upcoming Deliver Us From Evil; and, perhaps the most notable, but not for all the right reasons, director of 2008’s The Day The Earth Stood Still.

Yeah, that’s the guy apparently directing Doctor Strange. What’s interesting to me, glancing over his filmography, is that they’ve tapped a guy most linked to horror to direct this mostly because of what it might say about the tone they might take with the film. If they can pull off Dormammu they way they pulled off Bughuul from Sinister, that would really make Doctor Strange very interesting.

Also of note, the article notes that Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger are “in the mix” to write the film. Their credits include Kung Fu Panda, Kung Fu Panda 2, Kung Fu Panda 3, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel AND Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, so that’s pretty much everything you could hope for in a film about a young doctor being taught the ways of sorcery by three magical, talking, singing rodents.

Watch this space for updates to this story that could include Marvel confirming or denying this story entirely. What do you all think about this development? Yay or nay?

Alice W. Castle

Sworn to protect a world that hates and fears her, Alice W. Castle is a trans femme writing about comics. All things considered, it’s going surprisingly well. Ask her about the unproduced Superman films of 1990 - 2006. She can be found on various corners of the internet, but most frequently on Twitter: @alicewcastle
