Over in CBR’s Talk To The Hat column with Tom Brevoort, Brevoort responded to a question about if there were any situations where a writer had an idea and they just went with it with the following bit of information:
Andy Diggle came to me a few months back — and I think I’ve mentioned this project in the column before without talking about the specifics of it — but he had a hole in his schedule and he had an idea for taking the names of some of the classic Marvel western characters and reimagining them as new modern day characters. And I said that it sounded good and asked him to go off and write a pitch on what the project could be. It’s called “Six Guns,” it’s a contemporary action-adventure thriller set within the Marvel Universe — along the lines of something like Andy’s “The Losers,” but with a bit more of a super-heroic bent to it. The art is being done by Davide Gianfelice, who worked with Andy on “Daredevil Reborn.” We thought it stood a good chance of being successful, and now it’s a book that’s on the schedule for October.
Marvel’s Western is rarely touched on these days at all, only in series that involve time jumping and/or flashbacks. The last instance I can remember of the Marvel Western side being remotely relevant was when Hulkpool was blasting through time, and I suppose “relevant” there is however you want to define it. Either way, comparing this to the Losers – the comic, not the movie – does signify that this will most likely have a rather dark tone to it, which will be interesting in contrast with the characters and setting it’s seeking to rejuvenate.
So there you have it. Six Guns by Andy Diggle and David Gianfelice in October, and not to be confused with The Sixth Gun by Cullen Bunn (who is writing a few Marvel one-shots and minis for Fear Itself) and Brian Hurtt, which you should also be reading.
