Yesterday was the first day of San Diego Comic Con 2012, and while there were quite a few announcements from a certain Distinguished Competition and more, Marvel had but one panel with one headlining piece of news.
But that doesn’t mean there wasn’t more to learn! Hat tip to Comic Book Resources for quotes and recaps.
Writer James Asmus describes the upcoming “Gambit” series he is working on as a “dream come true,” promising some thievery and that Gambit would “satisfy you each and every month.” Oh my. And page 1 is apparently a shower scene… ladies.
Marjorie Liu received a massive round of applause for her news-making wedding in “Astonishing X-Men,” which will be leading into a honeymoon issue and no easy runnings for the happy couple. Asmus also teased a shower scene with Gambit… gentlemen.
The upcoming “Hawkeye” relaunch is being compared to the Eisner-nominated “Daredevil” relaunch, and while there is no shower scene Clint Barton will be shirtless for a lot of the series. I’m noticing a motif here, Marvel.
Kelly Sue and Dex Soy’s upcoming “Captain Marvel” received cheers and applause, with three advance copies given out to fans. Sana Amanat, one of Marvel’s editors, said that the book would feature Carol transitioning between roles and that “this is the kind of comic girls and boys, men and women, can enjoy, and it’s the kind of comic we should have been doing a long time ago.” Get excited, folks.
“Deadpool” writer Daniel Way announced that he is leaving the series, adding “I’ve got this other thing on the horizon.” “New Mutants” was also confirmed at ending with issue #50, although the characters won’t be leaving.
The most heartbreaking news, however, was that “X-Factor” is ending with issue #245 — LOLJK! Peter David, you joker. He did tease that #245 would feature a change in the book, however. Starting with #241, apparently a lot will happen.
“Hulk” was announced as turning into “Red She Hulk” with issue #58, which we covered earlier today. Either way, Jeff Parker writing a Hulk is all I needed to hear. Male, female, red, green, blue, whatever. Buy it! “Red She Hulk” also marks the second solo-female lead series Marvel will have on stands.
Much was also said about the Thanos mini from Joe Keatinge (and how Joe lost it when he saw the big guy show up in Avengers) and “First X-Men,” with Neal Adams noting that untold secrets would be explored quite a bit.

After introductions, newsy bits came along including:
- No plans for the “Young Avengers right now, although Arune Singh added “maybe soon.” Kate Bishop (the best Young Avenger, which you know to be true) will show up in “Hawkeye” and “Avengers.”
- On that same note, there will be some kind of announcement regaring a new unannounced ongoing series that is not called “Runaways” but will involve some of the characters. News will be revealed “before September,” which makes me assume it’s a December comic.
- Additionally, some “Secret Warriors” characters will be in a book not called “Secret Warriors.”
- Cosmic heroes are going to have a “much bigger profile” with Marvel NOW!
- Yearly event comics = summer movies. From Axel Alonso, “In summer time, you guys want summer movies, summer concerts, summer beach reads. We give you summer comics.”
- Marvel claims they need to “work out what Marvel magic is,” and that once they do you’ll see “Doctor Strange” #1.
- Jonathan Hickman will be adressing Nick Fury Jr and his relationship with his father.
