This is a bit of an odd one, but bear with us.
It looks like Price Lydon over at Kabooooom has reported that Victor Von Doom #1, originally set for release next week, has actually had the plug pulled on it. This would seem suspicious given that we can’t find additional confirmation from any additional sites (at least not from Google searching), except that this morning Nick Spencer seemingly confirmed on Twitter that Victor Von Doom is no more. As Spencer writes,
I see word is out about VICTOR VON DOOM. Trust me, no one is more bummed about this than I am. Really proud of the scripts and hope to get to work with @beckycloonan sooner rather than later. #teendoomforevs #teamdoom #DOOM
The whole thing seems a tad ominous and confusing, especially since just a few weeks ago we talked to Becky Cloonan at NYCC and it seemed like business as usual. In fact, we’ve been delaying the release of our Cloonan interview in order to put it out the week Doom comes out!
So, what happened? We’ve put out a few feelers to see if we can uncover more of what happened, and we’ll let you know if we find out anything.
UPDATE: Other sites do appear to be reporting the news now, and Robot 6 pointed out that Alejandro Arbona being let go from Marvel could have something to do with this as he was the book’s editor. So really, this is just becoming a huge ball of sadness at this point, and is incredibly unfortunate for fans (like us) eagerly anticipating the title.
Additionally, Becky Cloonan addressed the cancellation on Twitter, writing,
It’s disappointing news for sure, but I still love comics. Thanks for all the kind words dudes! <3 I’d hug all of you but I can’t reach.
Teen Doom might still see release in some form or fashion some day, but in the mean time it would probably be b est if everyone threw their hands to the sky and shouted “RICHARDS!!!”
