Yes, you read that right. And yes, this is maybe the best news you’ll read all day. Maybe. Depends on your affinity for squirrels, I guess.
Announced at Entertainment Weekly, it looks like one of the few characters to beat up Thanos by herself is finally getting her much-deserved ongoing series. Written by Ryan North and illustrated by Erica Henderson, the book is “intended to appeal equally to canon-heads and newcomers,” which is an interesting way to say that it’s for everyone but the point remains the same. The book will find Squirrel Girl heading off to college for some new solo adventures, and continuing to be “Unbeatable.”
As an aside, it is interesting to note that this book finds Squirrel Girl downgraded from an adult somewhat to a younger age — or perhaps I have been mistakenly assuming she was an adult for years, in which case her relationship with Wolverine is a thing that might cause some issues. That, or she’s going back to college as an adult, which is great and something that plenty of people do. However, the wonderful aesthetic previewed in the cover from Erica Henderson does seem to indicate that a fun, funny, younger-skewing slant with a lead heroine in college seems like it could be a Marvel “reaction” (so to say) to a certain other highly-anticipated fun, funny, younger-skewing slanted book with a lead heroine in college.
But, hey, the more the merrier. And with Ryan North, Erica Henderson and Rico Renzi coloring, this book is a shoe-in for most hotly anticipated Marvel 2015 debut already.
“The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl” #1 debuts in January. Here’s an Erica Henderson character sketch of Squirrel Girl to continue whetting your appetite:
